Freelance Copywriter CV Template
A freelance copywriter CV should help a client or recruiter understand the kind of writing you do, the formats you have delivered and your role in the work. This general-purpose template guide is designed for independent writers to adapt to their own experience, portfolio and target brief.
Name the writing work you want to be considered for
“Copywriter” can cover many forms of work. A short profile can point to the formats, subjects or channels that match your experience, while the project history shows what you actually wrote. Use the language of the opportunity where it accurately describes your work; do not add a specialty just because it appears in a brief.
A project entry can identify a client or client type, the dates, the audience or context when you may share it, and the deliverables you produced. Examples might include a campaign, a sequence of emails, web pages or editorial content, but include only formats you have personally worked on. A portfolio link can provide samples when you have permission to publish them.
Separate your writing from the wider campaign
Writing projects often sit inside larger marketing, product or editorial programmes. Make your own part clear: did you develop a brief, interview a subject, draft copy, edit supplied text or work with a reviewer? Describe collaboration accurately and avoid claiming responsibility for the full campaign unless that was your role.
Where you can disclose the audience or channel, include enough context to make the deliverable understandable. Where confidentiality or client approval limits what you can say, use a broad but truthful description instead. Do not reveal private briefs, unpublished copy or internal performance reports in a CV without permission.
Use outcomes only when you can explain the evidence
If a piece of work had a measurable result, make sure you know how that result was measured, what period it covers and whether it reflects your work alone or a wider team effort. Add the context in a concise phrase. If the figure is unavailable or confidential, it is better to describe the deliverable and its purpose than to invent a metric or imply a causal link you cannot support.
A useful outcome can also be a completed deliverable, a publication or a documented handover. The important point is accuracy. A CV should make your contribution clear without turning an unverified performance claim into a headline.
Keep samples, skills and versions connected
List writing tools or editorial skills that are relevant to the work, and connect them to projects where possible. A tool name on its own is less informative than a short account of how it fitted into your process. Avoid long lists of generic qualities; use your project record and selected samples to give those qualities context.
Keep a complete history of client assignments, then choose a focused set for each application. A role centred on web content may need different examples from one centred on brand copy or editorial work. Freelance CV Builder lets you save named versions and export a tailored CV while retaining the broader work record for later updates.
